Lumber Grade Stamps: What the Marks Actually Mean

Visual versus machine grading, the five things printed on a grade stamp, and why the species group beside the grade matters as much as the grade itself.

What a grade is actually for

Timber is not a manufactured material. Every piece grew, and every piece carries the record of how it grew — knots where branches were, grain that runs at an angle rather than straight, splits from drying, and a boundary between dense outer wood and softer heartwood. All of those reduce how much load the piece can carry, and none of them are evenly distributed.

Grading is the system that turns that variability into something an engineer can design with. A grade is a promise about the *worst* piece in the bundle, not the average one. When a span table says a certain joist size works at a certain spacing, it is relying on every piece in that grade behaving at least as well as the grade's minimum.

That is why substituting a lower grade because the merchant is out of stock is not a small compromise. The whole design rests on the number.

Two ways to grade

  • Visual grading: a trained, certified grader looks at each piece and assigns a grade based on published rules — the size and position of knots, the slope of the grain, wane along the edges, splits, and how the piece is expected to be loaded. It is fast, needs no equipment, and is still how the majority of framing timber is graded.
  • Machine grading: each piece is fed through a machine that flexes it and measures its stiffness, or scans it, and sorts it by measured performance rather than appearance. Machine stress rated and machine evaluated timber carry tighter, more consistent properties, which is why engineered work often calls for them. A visual check still catches defects the machine cannot see.

Neither method makes a piece stronger. They sort what already exists, which is why grading is sometimes described as a sorting operation rather than a quality process.

Appearance grades are a separate system

This trips people up constantly. There are grading systems for *how a piece looks* — used for boards, panelling, flooring and joinery — and completely separate systems for *what a piece can carry*. A high appearance grade tells you nothing about structural capacity, and structural grades say almost nothing about how the timber will look.

If a piece is going to hold something up, you want a structural grade. If it is going to be seen and not loaded, you want an appearance grade. Buying the expensive clear board for a joist is paying for the wrong property.

Reading the stamp

A grade stamp is small and cryptic, but it always carries the same handful of facts.

  • The grading agency: the body whose rules were applied and who certifies the mill. Without this the grade is just ink.
  • The mill: a number or name identifying who produced the piece, so a problem can be traced.
  • The grade: the structural classification. In North American light framing you will see things like Select Structural, No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, Stud, and the Construction, Standard and Utility grades. In Europe you will more often see a strength class from the C series, such as C16 or C24.
  • The species or species group: names such as SPF, Hem-Fir, Douglas Fir-Larch or Southern Pine. Timber is graded in groups because closely related species behave similarly.
  • The moisture condition: whether the piece was surfaced green or dry, and whether it was kiln dried. Green timber will shrink noticeably as it dries in place.

The species matters as much as the grade

A No. 2 in one species group and a No. 2 in another are not interchangeable, because the grade is a ranking within that species group, not an absolute value. The design values that go into a span table come from the species and the grade together, along with the size of the piece and how it is being used.

So when you are checking whether a joist will span an opening, you need four things and not one — species group, grade, section size, and spacing. Look all four up in the span table that applies where you are building, and take the answer from there. Anyone who quotes you a single number for what a 2x8 will span, with no species and no grade attached, is guessing.

Buying and sorting on site

Grades set the minimum, so within any bundle there is real variation, and it is worth using. Sort as you unload. Put the straightest, cleanest pieces where they matter — long spans, exposed work, door and window openings — and use the bowed and knotty ones for blocking, noggins and short cripples. Reject anything with a split running from an end, a knot going right through an edge, or a twist you cannot pull out.

That sorting is part of what the waste allowance on a timber order is paying for. A 10 percent allowance assumes a few pieces will not be good enough for the job you bought them for.
