Asphalt Driveway Estimate: Area to Tonnes to Truckloads

The full take-off for a driveway — measuring the area, choosing a thickness, converting to tonnes, and working out how many truckloads that actually books.

Asphalt is ordered by weight and measured by volume

That one sentence is the whole difficulty. You measure a driveway with a tape, which gives you an area. You decide how thick to lay it, which turns the area into a volume. But the plant sells asphalt by the tonne and the haulier charges by the load, so somewhere in the middle you have to convert volume into weight — and that conversion is the step where estimates go wrong.

Work through it in the same order every time and it stops being difficult.

Step one, the area

For a rectangular drive it is length times width. For anything else, break the shape into rectangles and triangles, work them out separately and add them up. Do not average a curve by eye across a large area, because an error here is multiplied by every step that follows.

Two things people forget to include. Turning areas and parking bays off the side of the run are part of the paving, and the apron where the drive meets the road usually is too. Measure the finished surface you intend to end up with, not the strip you happen to be standing on.

If your take-off already gives you a total area — most professional ones do, in square metres — the calculator asks for a length and a width, so put the area in as the length and 1 as the width. Area times thickness is the same number either way.

Step two, the thickness

Thickness is specified as the **compacted** depth, which is the thickness after the roller has been over it, not the depth of the loose material as it comes off the truck. Getting that the wrong way round is the single most common asphalt estimating error, and it is covered in detail in the guide on compaction rates.

Typical compacted depths run from around 50 mm for a surface course over an existing sound base, up to 100 mm or more for a full-depth residential driveway laid in two courses. Heavier use means more thickness. What matters for the estimate is that you use the same convention the density figure assumes — compacted.

Step three, volume to weight

Volume is area times compacted thickness. A driveway 10 metres long by 3 metres wide at 100 mm is 30 × 0.1 = 3 cubic metres, and adding a 5 percent waste allowance takes it to 3.15 cubic metres, or about 4.1 cubic yards.

Now the conversion. The asphalt calculator on this site uses compacted densities of about 2.43 tonnes per cubic metre for hot or warm mix, and about 2.20 for cold mix. Warm mix shares hot mix's density because it is the same aggregate and binder simply laid at a lower temperature. Cold mix genuinely carries more voids, so it weighs less for the same volume.

The same calculator will price the layers underneath the asphalt as well. Switch it from surface course to base course or sub-base and it works in compacted crushed stone at a nominal 2.1 tonnes per cubic metre instead — a figure worth checking against your own supplier's ticket, because it moves with the quarry. What it will not quote you is subgrade, because subgrade is the ground that was already there. You prepare it; nobody delivers it.

So our 3.15 cubic metres of hot mix is 3.15 × 2.43 = about 7.7 tonnes, or 8.4 short tons.

That figure is the one to quote the plant. Everything before it was geometry; this is the order.

Step four, truckloads

Divide the tonnage by the capacity of the truck actually being booked, and round up — a part load still occupies a whole truck and is usually charged as one.

Our 7.7 tonnes fits comfortably in a single 20 tonne load. That sounds trivial until you scale it. A 480 square metre car park at the same thickness is about 123 tonnes, which is seven 20 tonne loads, and now the sequencing of those loads is a real part of the job.

A useful companion number is how much surface one load covers. At 100 mm compacted, a 20 tonne load lays roughly 82 square metres. Knowing that lets you sanity check an estimate in your head and lets you plan where each load goes before it arrives.

The waste factor

Five percent is a normal allowance on asphalt and it covers spillage, material left in the truck, and the extra needed at edges and joints. It is deliberately lower than the 10 to 15 percent used on materials like soil or timber, for a specific reason.

Asphalt is sold by mass at its compacted density. The tonnage you order already accounts for the material being compressed into place, so there is no separate settlement or compaction allowance to add on top. Adding one would double-count, and on a large job that is an expensive mistake in the other direction.

Things that will change your number

  • Two-course construction: a base course and a surface course laid separately are two calculations at two thicknesses, not one calculation at the combined depth.
  • Falls and levels: a drive laid to a fall, or one that has to make up a dip, uses more material than its nominal thickness suggests. Measure the average depth honestly.
  • Minimum orders: many plants have a minimum load. On a small job the minimum, not your calculation, may be what you end up paying for.
  • Hot mix has a working window: it must be laid and rolled while hot, so the delivery schedule is part of the estimate, not an afterthought.
